Description

Shot Put

The shot put is an athletics (track and field) event involving "putting" (throwing in a pushing motion) a heavy metal ball, also called the shot, as far as possible.

Competitors take their throw from inside a circle 2.135 metres (7 feet) in diameter, with a toe board approximately 4" high at the front of the circle. The shot must land within a vector of approximately 30 degrees. The athlete must rest the shot in between the neck and shoulder and keep it tight to the neck while throwing. At the end of the throw, the thrower must push the throwing arm straight with the thumb pointing down; if the thrower does not push the ball out and throws it like a baseball, the thrower may receive injury. Throwing a shot requires immense strength and power as well as grace and balance; while not as much so as discus, shot put is not merely heaving a metal ball but requires finesse. The shot putters must enter and leave the circle from the rear half of the circle, or a foul is called. Other fouls include stepping out of the circle before the judge calls the mark, letting some article of clothing touch the top of the toeboard or outside the circle, and/or the shot falling outside of the borders to the left and the right. The distance thrown is measured from the front of the circle to where the shot lands at its nearest disturbance of the soil.

Each competitor gets a certain number of throws, usually 6 in elite competition, and the competitor with the farthest legal put is declared the winner. In men's competition, the shot weighs approximately 7.26kg kilograms (16 pounds). The women's shot weighs 4 kg (8.8 pounds). American high schools usually use 12 pound (5.44 kg) shots for boys and 4 kg shots for girls; these are sometimes known as practice shots. The weight of the ball is different depending the age group.

The shot put originates from Scottish highlanders putting a rounded cube stone or metal form of considerable weight from behind a given line.

Barnes was born in Charleston, West Virginia and began shot putting in high school. In 1985 he threw an impressive 66 ' 9.5" (20.36 m) with the prep shot of 12 lb (5.44 kg). After graduating from St. Albans High School near Charleston in 1985, he attended Texas A&M University where he broke school records (set by Randy Matson) with a 21.88 (71 ft 9.5 in) distance with the 16 lb (7.26 kg) full size shot.

He went to the 1988 Seoul Olympics where he threw 22.39 m (73 ft 5.5 in) and earned a silver medal at only 22. He came second to Ulf Timmermann of East Germany who threw 22.47 m. Then on January 20, 1989, he set a new indoor world record at the Sunkist Invitational in Los Angeles with a distance 22.66 m (74 ft 4.25 in), better than his outdoor personal best at the time.
On May 20, 1990, he broke Ulf Timmermann's outdoor record with a distance of 23.12 m. Barnes was banned from competing for 27 months after testing positive for the anabolic steroid methyltestosterone at Malmo, Sweden on August 7th that same year. He sued to have the suspension overturned, but lost. Due to the suspension he was unable to compete in the 1992 Olympics.

At the 1996 Olympic games Barnes won the gold medal that eluded him 8 years earlier with a come from behind 21.62 m throw on his final attempt. In 1998 he tested positive for androstenedione, an over-the-counter supplement (famously used by Mark McGwire), that is banned in track and field. Although Barnes claimed he didn't know andro was banned, he was suspended for life.

As of 2005, both of Barnes's records still stand. On occasion, usually during the Olymics, local media in his town will coax him into a demonstration at a local sports field, where he will regularly throw the shot a distance further than any of distances of the American qualifiers. He recently became a long driving competitor, competing to hit a golf ball as far as possible; he qualified for the 2005 World Long Drive Championship.
