Description

The 4 x100 meter relay or sprint relay is run in lanes over one lap of the track with four runners completing 100 meters each. The start is as for the 400 m. A baton must be passed within a 20 m exchange zone marked by (usually triangles which varies from track to track). The outgoing runner must not start behind a (usually orange) acceleration marker line or triangle 10 m further back. If the pass is not made while both runners are within the exchange zone, the team is disqualified.

Relay events can be traced to the ancient custom of sending messages via a series of couriers (skytalodromi or ‘runners with a message stick’). Each courier handed the stick over to the next until its destination was safely reached.

The team consisting of Jon Drummond, Andre Cason, Dennis Mitchell, Leroy Burrell, tied the world record one year later (37.40 United States Stuttgart, Germany 8/21/93). The USA has dominated this event for years but recently at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games the USA was defeated by Great Britian.
